What is kinbaku or shibari ?
The origin of kinbaku is rooted in Japanese BDSM, it is a practice of erotic bondage with ropes dating back to the early twentieth century, and which really appeared in Japan from the 1950s through different SM magazines of the period.
Note that there is no martial origin to this practice, contrary to many misconceptions. Kinbaku is not a Japanese art. In Japan, it is still a taboo and this kind of scenes take place most of the time in private or in places dedicated to SM.
The term shibari, properly speaking, is in a way an abuse of language, since it corresponds to the word “tied” in Japanese, but in the global sense of the word, even though it is commonly used in Western countries to define the japanese rope bondage.
More precisely, shibari is about restraint of body and constraint of mind, or deprivation of meaning, which takes place between consenting partners. This is to tie our accomplice, spice up our erotic play, or to develop our most taboo SM fantasies, in order to achieve a deep bliss for the tied person and share those emotions to the rigger.
In a shibari session, ropes can be self-sufficient, but it is also totally possible to add some complementary practices. Ex: blindfolds, hot wax, gag, etc …
In Japan, practitioners mainly use jute rope, which is probably the most suitable natural fiber rope. In the West, the use of hemp ropes is quite common, being easier to buy, but their handling is much less pleasant.
Why learning in kinbaku classes ?
The “B” of BDSM refers to Bondage, and all practices related to BDSM can be very intense or dangerous, so it is necessary to apprehend them gradually and with good sense.
The risks inherent in shibari can be twofold. First physical, because it is not an innocuous practice for the body. But also psychological, because of the emotional intensity that can emerge during ropes sessions.
